Rae

30 Sept 2005
Dear Edward,
I am so, so sorry to learn of Cindy's death, and truly sorry we had lost touch.
I met you briefly in OZ - not long before you and Cindy were to head home to the UK - and you were to start UNI at York. I was in OZ for Christmas and New Year
89/90, staying with my niece Karen.
The 3 of us, Cindy, Karen and me, had many happy shared memories. Our first holiday together we visited the Yorkshire Dales, Grassington, Kettlewell, Thwaite,
Keld and Hawes, and visited Bolton Abbey on the way back south. Such beautiful countryside, not far from you in York. Sadly I have no photos of that holiday.
We also had a wonderful time together visiting W. Scotland and the Isle of Skye.
I have put together a few photos for you, Toby, John and Rose.
I first met Cindy when she was a student at Guildford, she being a friend of Karen's. Saw a lot more of her when she was living and teaching in Hackney.
I always admired her, and remember thinking how organized and matter of fact she was. So mature for her years. Her willingness to have a go - her humour - always trying to see the bright side of things. Always willing to accept a challenge and support her friends.
I'm sure motherhood and family mentor gave her the challenge, fulfilment, and pleasure she desired. Very sure she was a wonderful MUM, and a dedicated and supportive wife. I'm only sorry I didn't make myself available for Cindy to share with me her pride and pleasure in her/your created family.
Such sad news - such sorrow.
My heart goes out to you.
I wish you strength. Shared love and support from one another to deal with the pain and emptiness. Cindy so dear and central to you all, taken from you far too early in your lives together.
My condolences.
Sincerely, and Cindy's
Rae Burbidge (Karen's auntie Rae) well actually just RAE.

2weeks August/September 1986
Isle of Skye & Western Scotland.
Kylerhea - crossing back from Skye to Scottish mainland we took cable-driven car ferry.
Could only take 3 cars at a time.

Map of the route

1.
Scottish Piper's we just came across while walking around
GLENCOE area .
Stayed one night at Glencoe YHA .
Glencoe: Photos taken by Jeff (lone Canadian traveller) - gave him a lift from Loch Lomond
YHA to Fort William.
Not sure why Cindy has her boots off - she either had blisters on her feet, or she had a paddle in the cold mountain stream!!

2.
Taking lunch at Lochailort
Harbour edge.
Glencoe:
Fording a river - box and cable system - needed strong arms to pull.
Cindy assisting in getting
Karen + Jeff back to base.
Shores of Loch Lomond.

3.
Near Mallaig:
Cindy & Karen being "blown in the wind" on the edge of a peat bog.
The earth moved under foot - strange feeling!!
Lunch on Rocky outcrop, also on day's walk around
Mallaig.
Stopped for Refreshments, another picnic this time on the banks of Loch Lomond.

4.
Isle of Skye:
Cindy & Karen crossing top of waterfall on our day adventure in the Cuillin Hills.
Looking back down from the CUILLIN HILLS out across
Loch Brittle and the Cuillin Sound.
Sheltering from the wind and looking at our map.
The Cuillins,
Skye.

5.
Near Mallaig:
Back down to the waters edge at Loch Morar coming to the end of our all day walk over rocks, peat bogs and heather.
Really clean white sand at the shoreline of the loch.
Isle of Skye:
On the road just before we descended to the small car-ferry at Kylerhea to get back to the Scottish mainland.

6.
On our way home stayed night at BEN NEVIS YHA.
Nice sunny afternoon so decided to climb
Ben Nevis - took 3hrs. to climb and only 1 hr. to descend.
Well worn path to walk + scramble up.
Didn't quite make the top as a blizzard started. Snow came down thick and fast. Totally unexpected!!
Good job we were all 3 wearing bright colours as visibility became almost zero.
Some walkers were only wearing T'Shirts, it had been such a sunny afternoon when we started.
As we descended the snow became cold, cold
Rain - and this was only beginning of September!!.
